City Council Extends Call For Gas Plant Redevelopment Proposals, Furloughed Medieval Fair Jousters Answer The Call

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — City Council’s decision to extend the deadline for Gas Plant District redevelopment proposals took an unexpected turn Tuesday after a group of furloughed medieval fair jousters clanked into chambers to formally pitch their vision for a castle-themed attraction complete with a surrounding gator moat.

The group arrived in full armor, swords tied off for safety, dragging a foam-core presentation board across the tile floor as councilmembers paused to determine whether this was part of the agenda or a live demonstration.

“Our industry has been hit hard since the hurricanes last year,” said the group’s spokesperson, visor raised. “And St. Pete needs a landmark.”

According to the proposal, the Gas Plant District would be transformed into a “historically inspired fortress experience,” featuring battlements, drawbridges, and a water-filled moat populated by live alligators “for authenticity.” The castle interior would host events, retail, and “educational jousting demonstrations,” pending insurance approval.

The proposal also showed how the moat could act as a reservoir against flood damage amid future hurricanes, to which one initially skeptical council member exclaimed, "Damn, this idea is actually making a lot of sense."

Midway through the pitch, one jouster shifted his weight, producing an unmistakable noise that echoed slightly inside his armor. The room fell silent as several councilmembers glanced at one another, clearly wondering what it would be like to fart inside a sealed medieval suit of armor, and whether the wearer had any choice but to sit with it.

The jouster did not address the incident and continued gesturing toward a rendering of the castle’s “interactive moat experience,” though his colleagues appeared increasingly uncomfortable.

City officials later confirmed the proposal was accepted “as part of the public process,” noting that the extension of the deadline was intended to encourage broad participation.

“We wanted to hear from everyone,” said one councilmember. “And we did.”

While City Council is still taking proposals,  following the castle pitch the majority voted that "the castle idea is actually pretty cool."
