TAMPA — In what representatives describe as "a fresh start" and critics describe as "not how any of this works," artist Ye announced Tuesday that he will officially shorten his name once again, rebranding himself as Kan ahead of two scheduled Tampa concerts later this month at Raymond James Stadium.
The performer formerly known as Kanye West, and later Ye, reportedly hopes the latest name change will help move the public conversation beyond years of controversy, including antisemitic remarks and the release of a song titled Heil Hitler.
"Kan represents growth," a statement from the artist's team read. "Like Genghis Khan. A visionary who wasn't afraid to reshape the world. It's streamlined, forward-looking, and significantly less likely to remind people of recent headlines."
Industry experts were skeptical.
"Typically a rebrand is something a company does after a logo redesign or merger," said one crisis communications consultant. "It's less common when the challenge is... everything else."
The announcement comes just weeks before the artist's scheduled June 26 and June 28 performances in Tampa, leaving many local fans scrambling to determine whether they purchased tickets to see Kanye, Ye, or Kan.
"I honestly can't keep up anymore," said one concertgoer. "I bought the tickets three names ago."
Others appeared largely unconcerned.
"I'm still going," said a Tampa resident. "If he changes it again before the concert, I'll learn the new one in the parking lot."
Local merchandise vendors have reportedly delayed printing shirts until closer to showtime amid concerns another rebrand may already be underway.
One vendor said he was considering selling blank shirts and filling in the name with a Sharpie the day of the event.
